Many have likely seen the post that first went out on Snapchat, and then Facebook that was written by an unknown poster and called for people to loot and riot on Sunday evening in Cedartown.
Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome said other departments in Polk County – including the PCPD, the Sheriff’s Office and Rockmart Police – have all joined together in an effort to investigate and either prove the post a prank, or find out who is trying to instigate violence.
“The message was forwarded to me by a local teacher,” Newsome said. “There is no way to know any validity to it or not, and we don’t have the luxury of ignoring it.”
Newsome said he first assigned his criminal investigation division to the task of tracking down the origin of the message, and following a Wednesday afternoon meeting gained the cooperation of Polk Police, Rockmart Police and the Drug Task Force in helping track down the person responsible.
He added that area Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have also been called into lend their aid and resources to the search.
The message called for looting and rioting on the night of Sunday, June 7, with the intention of hitting specifically targeted stores, like Walmart, Hibbet’s Sports and a vape shop.
Newsome asked the public to please aid in the search for the suspect if they have any information on who might have posted the message to please call 911 immediately.
