POLICE: Man arrested on kidnapping, other charges during traffic stop on Gibson Street

Reginald Clay Barnett

A traffic stop on Tuesday night ended with an arrest on major felony charges after the driver was accused of forcing a woman into a car, according to Cedartown Police.

Chief Jamie Newsome reported that a traffic stop around 9 p.m. ended with the arrest of Reginald Clay Barnett, 56, of 558 Irwin St., Cedartown, on May 31 at 9:18 p.m. when he was stopped by officers at the intersection of Rock and Gibson Streets in Cedartown.

Newsome said the officer became suspicious of the behavior of the female passenger, and through further investigation learned that Barnett and the woman were in an estranged relationship, and she was physically forced into the car with him.

After verifying information on the scene, officers took Barnett into custody and booked him on several felonies for kidnapping, false imprisonment, and aggravated stalking. He also faces charges of improper parking, suspended registration, no insurance, driving while license suspended or revoked, and battery.

He remains in the Polk County Jail with no bond set as of this posting.
