Play at Peek provides future fun

New playground gives generations to come opportunities to explore, imagine and more

A campaign to rebuild a playground came to fruition during the spring, and the new space was officially unveiled in April for youth to enjoy far into the future.

The Play at Peek campaign began in 2023 with fundraising, planning and procuring the new equipment but sped up with a volunteer effort in March to put the pieces together for the new playground at Peek Park on North College Street in Cedartown.

Hundreds put in sweat equity to replace the 20+ year old wooden structure that was built by many of the same hands who took part this go round as well.

The volunteer work ended after a week, but a few more weeks of fixes and ensuring the rubberized surface for the new playground was perfectly poured extended the opening date to the perfect weekend in April.

Alongside the Cedar Valley Arts Festival, the city joined with many of the organizations who contributed to the project and a crowd of children waiting to rush in and try out the new equipment.

Boy, do they have a lot to enjoy at the new playground.

Zip lines, climbing structures that resemble downtown buildings, new swings, a variety of playground rides (imagine a seesaw and a merry-go-round were merged into one, for instance) and even an ambulance children can make-believe they driving down Main Street.

The city was able to secure donations for the entire portion of the new equipment and build, but did contribute some materials and a lot of labor into the process of bringing about the new Play at Peek project.

Some past coverage from the playground build is available on Polk Today, including a release from the Atrium Health Floyd Polk Foundation here.
