Peek Park Playground set to be ready for CVAF

Peek Park will be getting back to normal in the coming days as work nears completion on the new playground built with volunteer help and monetary donations to replace the previous volunteer-led build.

City Manager Edward Guzman said the playground is around “95% complete” with only the rubberized surface to finish putting down and finishing touches to put on the new equipment to complete the build that began back in March with a five-day rush to put most of the parts together for the new playground.

Guzman told Commissioners during his Manager’s report at Monday’s regular session that the playground should be opened – so long as weather cooperates – by the weekend of the Cedar Valley Arts Festival later this month.

“My money is that we’ll be doing a ribbon cutting at the Arts Festival, but that is going to be dependent on the weather this week,” Guzman said. “But I have hope. We are close.”

Commissioner Ryan Casey noted during his comments at the end of the meeting that the progress on the build is extraordinary, considering that he heard from another Georgia Municipal Association member city that they were only 60% complete with the work. Leathers and Associates, the contractor putting together that playground in the unnamed city, is also responsible for Cedartown’s new playground space.

Here’s a look at the playground progress so far:

A final cost for how much it took to build the new structure which replaced the wooden one previously in its place built 20+ years ago will be available in May.

The new playground is customized to resemble Cedartown and took in the suggestions of kids for the design. It includes swing sets, slides, a climbing wall, and even a zip line. The playground is also able to host youth who may have disabilities with play equipment appropriate for their skill level.

The Cedar Valley Arts Festival is set for April 27 and 28, 2024.

Check back for more updates as they become available.
