Swings are sitting idle, a pair of cool-looking zip lines haven’t carried anyone yet, and see saws are just waiting for kids to come and have fun as the Peek Park Playground is all ready to go.
A month after the volunteer build began paid for due to fundraising efforts from around the community, the new playground will be opening on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. during a ceremony being held amid the Cedar Valley Arts Festival.
Here’s a fresh look at the new playground:

The new playground replaces the old wooden structures with new composite materials, a rubberized play surface, zip lines, a play area specifically for smaller children, a rock climbing wall, plenty of places to climb and slide, and (my personal favorite) whimsical small mushrooms to hop from one spot to the next. And much more.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is set to open the new playground during the Arts Festival, and has been closed off since work finally wrapped up earlier this month.
Volunteers put in a five-day effort to get most of the way completed on the playground, but some finishing touches and the fencing were finished by city employees.
