PCPD: Woman called 911 to report shots fired, but nothing happened

Cynthia B. Fowler

Polk County Police couldn’t take any chances when they got a call over the weekend that someone had been shot and was being driven to the hospital, but ultimately found that nothing happened and the report was false.

The scramble to respond to an alleged shooting happened Saturday morning, June 15, when 911 received a call that a man had shot another, and the victim was being taken to the hospital by their wife.

An officer went to the hospital to wait for the victim while another rushed out to the scene to see if they could find the alleged shooter, but while on the way got on the phone with the original caller, who then handed it over to the alleged suspect who told police that nothing happened, and nothing was wrong.

When an officer arrived at an Old Collard Valley Road property to investigate further, he spoke to the 911 caller – Cynthia B. Fowler, 63, a homeless woman. She told police she hadn’t seen the shooting, but heard it.

The officer on scene then talked to the alleged suspect, who explained to officers that Fowler was dropped off by a relative after the pair had a long relationship, and planned to go elsewhere on Saturday morning before the commotion began over the incident.

Police ultimately determined after speaking to several people on scene and further understanding the details that Fowler needed to be taken into custody for Improper Use of 911.

She was taken into custody without incident and remained in the Polk County Jail on the single charge. A $500 bond was set for her release.
