Two people were taken into custody in connected incidents on Sunday when Polk County Police conducted a traffic stop on Piedmont Highway, according to reports.
PCPD first arrested Javon Vincent Mahon, 28, of a Cedartown address on Sunday evening, January 14, after he was pulled over onto Palmer Road for a broken tail light – including non functioning brake lights around 8:40 p.m. When officers stopped the 2014 Kia Forte, they explained to Mahon the issue and asked for his license.
He wasn’t able to produce it because as the report alleged, Mahon had no license at all according to the state system. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Mahon sought out a friend to come get the car from Palmer Road, and when Makaila Breanna Jones, 22, of a Cedartown address arrived along with another driver, officers immediately noted something was wrong.
Jones had pulled up directly behind police, then when the officer went up to the window they noted an “overwhelming odor of Marijuana emitting from the interior of the maroon in color Honda SUV.”
Police reported that Jones admitted to smoking just 10 minutes before leaving to come collect Mahon’s vehicle. The officers also reported a “strong odor of marijuana” coming off of Jones as well, and decided to conduct field sobriety tests.
She was unable to pass those tests and taken into custody. Police also had her take a preliminary breath test and she though she blew under the legal limit, officers did find an opened bottle of tequila under the rear passenger floor board.
Both Mahon and Jones were ultimately taken into custody without further incident.
Polk County Police charged Mahon for driving while license expired and no brake lights or working tail signals, both misdemeanors. He was released on a $1,560 bond.
Officers also charged Jones with misdemeanors for driving under the influence – less safe – combination of 1-3, an open container violation and for driving an unregistered vehicle. She was released on a $3,100 bond.
