A severe thunderstorm warning was set to expire just minutes ago for the area as heavy rain continues, and a tornado watch remains in effect through 9 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City issued the severe thunderstorm warning for portions of Paulding, Cobb, Floyd, Polk and Bartow counties starting around noon, and it’ll continue until 1:30 p.m.

Heavy rain, hail and lightning that was powerful enough to knock out power temporarily at Polk.Today headquarters have already moved past western Polk County and are now impacting other areas of the county.

Please stay off the roads during this storm. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

Seek shelter immediately if you see a tornado or one forming.

Quarter-sized hail and winds up to 60 mph are expected with this storm.

Polk is included in the tornado watch for Northwest Georgia that also encompasses Dade, Catoosa, Whitfield, Gordon, Chattooga, Floyd, Walker and Bartow counties. It’ll be in effect until at least 8 p.m. for the Northwest Georgia counties.

A new line of storms stretching from For Payne to Gadsden to Birmingham are expected to impact the area through the afternoon and evening hours.
