Missouri woman arrested on multiple charges in brief chase with children in car

Leeann Stefanie Weeden

A Missouri woman remained in the Polk County jail on bond after she was eventually stopped in a brief chase with police while driving erratically and at high speed with children in the vehicle.

Cedartown Police reported that one of those children called 911 on a phone while inside the car on Monday around 8:20 p.m. to get help from police while their mother, Leeann Stefanie Weeden, 35, of Ballwin, Missouri (a suburb of St. Louis,) was driving at high speed and erratically eastbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Cedartown. Police initially thought they stopped her, but it turned out to be another vehicle.

That’s when Weeden was spotted by police, who went by officers at a high rate of speed and then 200 yards away came to a complete stop. They tried to stop the vehicle at first, but were unsuccessful and a chase was underway with Weeden “driving all over the roadway” per a Cedartown Police report on the incident.

Weeden was cut off by officers at the intersection of Main Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard, and was taken into custody without any further incident.

The report stated that police questioned the children in the car and learned that Weeden was in the midst of a mental breakdown, had driven by the residence where they were staying Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard several times in a reckless way, and almost hit a car at least once. They were returned to adults where they were staying while in town.

Weeden remained jailed on a $14,400 bond on charges of felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and cruelty to children in the first degree. She was also jailed on misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, improper backing, driving on wrong side of the roadway, improper lane change/useage, obstruction of law enforcement officers, failure to maintain lane and for lack of seatbelts on the children in the back.
