Mr. Joseph Screven Brewster Jr.

Mr. Joseph Screven Brewster Jr. passed away peacefully at home in Shalimar, FL on May 26, 2024. Joe was born on February 22, 1949, in Cedartown, GA to Joseph Screven Brewster, Sr. and Mary Moorhead Brewster.

He went to Cedartown city schools and was a freshman on the 1963 AA state championship football team. He also attended The Bolles School in Jacksonville, FL from 1964-1967 where he played on the varsity football team.

Joe received his undergraduate degree and Master of Public Administration from the University of Georgia and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After graduation, he moved to Roswell, GA where he served as Assistant City Manager from 1973-1976, and
later moved to Calhoun, GA where he served as the Gordon County Administrator.

In 1981, Joe joined Cox Communications and enjoyed a long and successful career living in Cleveland, Ohio, Pensacola and Gainesville, FL, before moving to the Fort Walton Beach area as the Director of Public /Government Affairs in 1992 where he retired in 2009.

Joe was actively involved in community activities wherever he resided. He was a member of The Rotary Club of Fort Walton Beach. He also served on the board of directors of the FWB Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Okaloosa Co.

Joe served as president of the Economic Development Council of Okaloosa Co. and was a two-time chairman of the Florida Cable Television Association.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Buddy Brewster. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Janet Foster Brewster, his sons Stacy Joseph Brewster of Destin, FL, and Jonathan Foster Brewster, and his wife Sarah of Monticello, FL. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Brody, Charlotte, Weston, Adeline, and Nolan Brewster; his sister Linda Brewster Ayers and husband Bucky of Auburn, AL; and brother John Gordon Brewster and wife Wanda of Cedartown, GA.

Graveside services for Mr. Brewster will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 11 o’clock in the morning at Northview Cemetery, with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating.
