It’s Fall, Y’all! First Day of Autumn 2022 arrives

Happy first day of Fall! While our temperatures here in Northwest Georgia are still in the 80’s, it won’t be much longer until we start feeling the crisp air of the new season. (Good news is we can expect fall temps soon per the forecast!)

The Autumnal Equinox marks the start of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. For those residing in the Southern Hemisphere, this equinox occurs in March. During this time, the Sun crosses the equator from north to south. Later next Spring, this same event will mark the Vernal Equinox.

This is the time of year when our days are considerably shorter than our nights, which all culminates in the Winter Solstice later this year. On the Equinox, however, both day and night are relatively equal in length.

This also means our temperatures will soon begin to drop with cold nights and cool days as we move into October. For us, that also means the changing colors of the leaves! But did you know that leaves changing color in the Fall doesn’t have anything to do with current weather temperatures?

That’s right, fall foliage is due to the amount of daylight available, as well as photosynthesis. There’s a great article over at Farmer’s Almanac with some fun facts about how this change actually happens.

Autumn is a time of comfort for many of us, as there are lots of things to look forward to with the coming of this season. There are fall festivals happening everywhere, as well as apple and pumpkin picking; Halloween comes in October and Thanksgiving is just around the corner in November.

What’s your favorite way to celebrate this season? Are you sad to see summer go? We’d love to hear your thoughts on Fall and any events you all have planned this year! Get in touch with Polk Today to let us know more!
