Goose gives up flight from jail officials

A goose had to give up its flight from law enforcement and animal control this morning after it landed itself in hot water outside of the Polk County Jail.

Fortunately for this feathered felon, its time behind bars was temporary.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office this morning encountered a goose wandering around the outside of the jail facility just before 8 a.m., and sought to escape from authorities by flying over the fence. However, deputies were able to get her wrangled up and avoid any damage the goose might have gotten from trying to flee capture, per a social media post about the “incident.”

“She could not tell us where she came from or how she got there, but we did notice she had an injured foot,” the posting noted.

The Sheriff’s Office got some help from Animal Control in ensuring that this goose on the loose didn’t damage itself any furhter, and getting it off of jail property.

Though temporarily captured, the goose affectionately given the name of “Bernice” was taken into custody by Derek Tilley, who took her for a new home at a local farm.

Here’s the full post. Enjoy!

This morning at approximately 0743, a white female was discovered inside the perimeter fence at the Polk County Jail. When we approached her she attempted to go over the perimeter fence in an attempt to escape capture. We managed to detain her so she wouldn’t be harmed by the razor wire on the perimeter fence. She could not tell us where she came from or how she got here, but we did notice she had an injured foot. We were able to call for backup and after a lengthy standoff involving 2 agencies, we were able to take her into custody. “Bernice” has since been transported to receive medical care.

Thank you to Polk County Animal Control (Jeff Crawford and Tina Angle) and for assisting us with this call. Another Thank you to Derek Tilley for transporting Bernice and giving her a new home on the farm.

Happy Wednesday Folks! 🦆
