GDOL: Polk unemployment figures remain low through September

Unadjusted figures statewide show drop across several regions, down to 3.3% in NWGA

Job seekers are able to find open positions based on the latest figures from the Department of Labor show that Polk County’s unemployment rate is down a full point in preliminary tallies.

The state Department of Labor had the rate at 3.5% for the month of September, with only 672 claims overall out of the overall number of people available for work of over 19,000 residents. That was a drop of nearly 200 people – 199 in total – from the month of August, where the rate sat at 4.5%.

Statewide, the rate had dropped eight tenths of a point, another decrease in unemployment as regions reported dips in various sectors. It sat at 3.6% for the month of September for Georgia overall, and was at 4.1% in August.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson announced today that all of Georgia’s Regional Commissions reported a decrease in September unemployment rates.

“This fall, unemployment rates are dropping all across Georgia,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson in a press release on Thursday. “While some metro areas throughout the state have seen a slight dip in jobs, the overall increase in employment shows that more residents are finding work and contributing to our local economies. I will continue to fight for the resources our citizens need to thrive and ensure that Georgia’s economy remains competitive and the No. 1 place to do business for years to come.”

Northwest Georgia also saw a dip as the region saw a decrease of eight-tenths of a point to 3.3%. Amid that decrease was a jump in the region’s labor force month-over-month form August, with an additional 2,299 people part of the marketplace for jobs. Some 448,171 people in the region are part of that market.

Out of that figure, some 433,477 people are employed currently in the region.
