Four way stop planned for Cave Spring Rd. intersection

A four-way stop will soon go into place as the city is taking the final steps toward ensuring detours around a main thoroughfare through town are safe to travel.

During the opening work session of 2025, the only topic up for public discussion from the Cedartown City Commission was a new set of stop signs going up at the intersection of Cave Spring Road and West Girard Avenue. They plan to approve a plan to add two more stop signs at the intersection to make traffic stop all ways.

City Manager Edward Guzman noted the plan was being implemented – if approved during the January 13 Regular Session – as another traffic safety measure as additional traffic begins flowing through the area. Guzman noted that since 2010, the city has reported 48 collisions at the intersection.

“We hope the additional stop signs will decrease the number of collisions that have happened at West Girard and Cave Spring Road. We expect it will be needed as the area becomes busier due to the bridge replacement project,” Guzman.

Both the planned bridge replacement on North Main Street on the Business Hwy. 27 route controlled by the state and new housing development are set to contribute an increase of traffic along Girard Avenue as drivers look for alternative routes around town to avoid increasing congestion along detours.

Drivers are already required to stop heading each direction on West Girard Avenue into and out of the Westside Industrial Park where several hundreds of workers come and go throughout the day. Not far from the intersection on West Girard Avenue, land is being cleared for a new round of housing.

Commissioners are likely to approve the new signage to go up as soon as possible with the new bridge replacement project set to shut down traffic starting this week.
