“Flying High” book signing to bring together Polk Co. Pot Plane participants

PCHS to host author, pilots and ground crew from infamous 1970s marijuana smuggling operation

Want to learn more about the infamous Polk County Pot Plane incident that occurred in the 1970s? There’s not only a book covering the event available from author Jim Kitchens, but also many of the participants in the event are coming together for a book signing this weekend in downtown Cedartown.

The incident that took place in early August 1975 and saw a DC-4 full of marijuana landed on a makeshift field on Treat Mountain was last year given more background in a book titled “Flying High,” but now several of the participants including one of the ringleaders Marty Raulins and two of the pilots who flew the plane Jim Thurman (movie) and Bob Eby (the actual pilot) are gathering on July 24 starting at 2 p.m.

Also on hand will be Derry Farris and Rik Hodge, both members of the ground crew.

Copies of the book will be on sale, along with Polk County Pot Plane t-shirts at the museum gift shop as well.

The book itself tells the story of how a plane from Colombia landed on Treat Mountain in 1975 and became national news.

Follow details of the upcoming event at the Polk County Historical Society facebook page.
