“Flying High” book signing brings together Polk County Pot Plane participants

Over the weekend and just ahead of the 46th anniversary of a daring plan to smuggle marijuana into the country on a plane via a landing in Polk County, participants of that event gathered to talk about old times and talk with those interested in the story during a book signing on July 24.

The Polk County Historical Society Museum’s second floor saw a crowd gather around pilot Jim Thurman, along with John Nuckolls, Marty Raulins, and Derry Ferris – all who took part in the event and signed copies of “Flying High,” the book written by Jim Kitchens and released in 2020 about the historic event.

Participants in the August 1975 landing of a DC-4 on Treat Mountain in Polk County got the chance to answer questions about what happened that night and why they were caught by police on that fateful evening. The book details the events leading up to the events in 1975 and more. Thurman was the pilot who flew the DC-4 off the mountain for the movie based on the incident.

Copies of the book and Polk County Pot Plane t-shirts remain on sale at the museum’s gift shop for those who missed the event.
