Floodwaters rise after day of rain

It has become a tradition of sorts over recent years: at least one storm pushes through the region, leaving behind inches of rain and causing floodwaters to rise sometime during the winter. Over the past few years those rains came during the opening days of the year.

This year, Mother Nature waited until mid-February to deliver the monsoon to Polk County.

Rising waters in Cedar and Euharlee Creeks have caused flooding around Cedartown and Rockmart, and additional flooding is spread across the county as tributaries are overflowing their banks after several inches of rain fell across the region on Wednesday.

Some roadways and streets might still be covered with water as emergency messaging went out earlier to residents warning them not to drive around closed barriers or through standing water.

A flood warning was lifted ahead of this afternoon’s expiration.

More rain is set to return over the weekend and bring potential for more rising waters.

Check back for additional weather updates as they become available.
