Downtown Entertainment Map getting Commission blessing

An area of downtown Cedartown is going to become an Entertainment District, providing opportunities for businesses outside of the norm and for residents to enjoy their time shopping and eating on Main Street.

The Cedartown City Commission on Monday evening, August 5, heard an update on the forthcoming entertainment district plan, which is likely to become official in September per City Manager Edward Guzman.

Commissioners had questions about the ability to expand the footprint of the proposed district centered around Main Street as downtown business changes, which Guzman said would be possible through their own approval of new maps later on.

The concept of the Entertainment District has already been put into action in other cities around Northwest Georgia with positive results overall.

It would allow a limited area where adults over the age of 21 might choose to sip while they shop within a confined area, utilizing a system to ensure that changing cups or stickers provide proof that beverages are legal and others aren’t attempting to abuse the privilege.

The area would include a portion of Main Street from Sterling Holloway Place to Ware Street and stretching no further out than a portion of Warehouse Street to include West Cinemas, for instance.

The City Manager said he expects approval for the map to come up on the September agenda for the Commission’s regular session.

Cedartown’s Director of Tourism and Economic Development Oscar Guzman put forth the idea for consideration by the City Commission in June.
