Doug Sanders Golf Museum holding a ceremony on Saturday for their grand opening

Coming up this weekend, a new museum is celebrating its opening day that honors a golfing legend from right here in Polk County.

The Doug Sanders Golf Museum is holding their grand opening ceremony and Memorial Service honoring the golfing legend on Saturday, August 29 starting at 1 p.m. for the ribbon cutting at 117 Woodland St., Cedartown.

Along with a ribbon cutting and social distanced ceremony, both the Doug Sanders Golf Museum and the Cedartown Museum of Coca-Cola Memorabilia will be open free of charge to the public.

The Doug Sanders Golf Museum showcases only a portion of the large collection of golfing memorabilia collected by the legendary pro golfer through his long career and retirement on the PGA tour.

Museum Executive Director Daniel Morris said the event is being held rain or shine.

Anyone planning on attending will be required to follow social distancing guidelines, and complimentary face masks and hand sanitizer will be available throughout the museum for participants. An outdoor seating option will also be available for the memorial service and the reception.

The service during the grand opening is set to honor the legacy left behind by Sanders following his death on April 12 at the age of 86. Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders grew up in Cedartown and learned his golf at courses around the area. Ultimately he won 20 PGA events, took four runner-up finishes at major events.

Sanders had previously passed his collection onto the Morris family, and they took on the chance to showcase the variety of memorabilia – signatures from Masters winners on flags from the pins, monogrammed golf bags featuring the John Hancock of presidents over the past 40 years, and even items from the men who landed on the moon in the Apollo program.

The museum features notable examples of what Sanders kept over the years, and much more remains to be showcased in the future.

Prior to the museum’s opening, pre-orders of apparel from the Museum Pro-Shop are available until 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 27. Those interested can e-mail jennyb@cedarstream.com for more information about getting several items with the museum logo available on them. (See the flyer for prices.)
