DA, deputies tangle with suspect in dustup at courthouse

Stanley Puckett

District Attorney Jaeson Smith became a victim in a case during an incident on Monday outside of his office at the Polk County Courthouse involving a man who wanted his case dropped, and refused to leave until it was.

Except that wasn’t going to happen, and the suspect – Stanley Puckett – wasn’t willing to leave without a fight.

Puckett, 27, of a Powder Springs address, came up to the courthouse on Monday to visit the District Attorney’s office and demanded of staff in the front office at the window that his case be dismissed.

His banging, shouting and cursing drew the attention of new DA Smith who told Puckett he needed to leave or face criminal trespass charges. Smith said that Puckett refused, and deputies were called from courthouse security to remove him.

“That’s when all hell broke loose,” Smith said.

Puckett’s refusal to leave turned physical as deputies tried to subdue him, but he fought back and Smith in an attempt to help was kicked in the process. Eventually officers got him under control, but only after a taser was deployed to prevent any further harm to police, Smith or himself during the incident. Officers were also bit by Puckett during the incident, Smith said.

The outer area of the DA’s office is about the size of two telephone booths, around a four-foot by eight-foot space put up as a measure of security for the staff to prevent situations like this from spilling into the whole office.

Puckett was later booked into the Polk County Jail on Monday night on multiple charges. His bond was denied following the incident.

He faces charges in this encounter with law enforcement of misdemeanors for two counts of simple battery, nine counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers, two counts of interference with government property and one count of criminal trespass.

Due to Smith becoming a victim during the incident, the impending case will have to be assigned to a neighboring circuit for prosecution.

Puckett was previously involved in a domestic violence-related incident in late October and charged for striking a victim and a minor, and was sending harassing messages via text.
