Polk County’s number of COVID-19 cases has reached 62, and the number of positives around the state increased past 30,000 as of the midday May 5 update from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
According to state health officials, the tally sits at 30,420 people who have been found to have the virus in tests began in late February. Sadly, some 1,302 Georgians have died due to the virus. Out of the total positives, some 5,699 people required treatment in the hospital for COVID-19, and there were 1,324 intensive care admissions.
The total number of tests continues to grow throughout the state as well. As of the May 5 update before noon, some 204,137 tests have been conducted as sites across the state continue to grow.
Currently, Polk County residents who want a test have to go to free sites in Bartow or Floyd County.
Those counties have much higher numbers than Polk. Here’s a breakdown of where the surrounding area stands as of midday on May 5:
- Bartow County: 355 positive tests for COVID-19, with 123 people having been hospitalized and 31 deaths from the virus.
- Floyd County: 150 positive tests for COVID-19, with 39 people hospitalized and 11 deaths reported.
- Paulding County: 212 positive tests for COVID-19, with 53 people hospitalized and nine deaths from the virus.
- Haralson County: 30 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with eight people hospitalized and two deaths reported.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that COVID-19 has been found in 1,171,510 people and that 68,279 people have died from the virus since reporting began in late February. Some 20 states have reported more than 10,000 positive cases of the virus, with New York still the largest number at 313,836 people found with the virus, and more than 24,000 deaths.
