Polk County’s death toll due to COVID-19 increased by two more people in the past 24 hours according to the Georgia Department of Public Health’s afternoon update on the toll the virus is taking on Georgia.
The latest reports stated that an 87-year-old and a 68-year-old woman, both of whom had pre-existing conditions that were part of their comorbidity factors, were among the latest deaths in Polk County. That marks five since the beginning of the month so far. A majority of the deaths have occurred in nursing homes, as previously reported.
Polk County positives increased by another 26 on the day, and two new hospital patients were also included in the August 5 update from the DPH. That brought the total cases to 716, and the hospitalizations to 36 in the past 24 hours.
Statewide, the increase of another 3,817 pushed Georgia past a milestone of now 201,713 positives for COVID-19 since tracking began in late February. That’s out of nearly 1.7 million tests conducted statewide, an 11% infection rate based on those who have been tested.
Sadly, another 65 Georgians lost their fight with COVID-19 to bring the death toll to 3,984 as of August 5. The number of hospitalizations in total is also at 19,788, up another 362 patients in the past day. Georgia’s ICU admissions in total sat at 3,616 people who needed additional care.
Nationwide, COVID-19 has as of August 4 infected another 49,988 people, bringing the tally since tracking began to 4,748,806 people who have tested positive for the virus. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention put the daily death toll in the United States as of August 4 at 1,107 people, bringing the national figure to 156,311 deaths.
