Counting COVID Cases: Second death reported in Polk, total cases now at 205

Polk County added a death to the tally of COVID-19 cases provided by the Georgia Department of Public Health, but lost one in the total cases overall in the latest report on Tuesday afternoon.

The Polk County Standard Journal and WGAA Radio are both reporting that an 83-year-old woman with chronic health conditions was the latest to die from the novel coronavirus locally, which came after a 67-year-old man died from the virus in early May. No additional details about the death were immediately available. Update: Georgia Department of Public Health officials confirmed that the woman who died did have multiple underlying conditions involved, and she passed away on June 15.

Polk County’s total number of COVID-19 cases now sits at 205, after a Monday total of 206. The loss of a case is usually attributed to reporting errors that are later corrected. There have now been 16 hospitalizations locally since reporting began.

The statewide tally of positive cases shot past 80,000 to land at 81,291 as of Tuesday, June 30. Out of that, some 11,051 people have been hospitalized, and 2,323 people have required ICU admission. Georgia’s total number of deaths now sits at 2,805 people.

Governor Brian Kemp on Monday announced that he was extending executive orders for a Public Health State of Emergency and to keep social distancing restrictions in place for another month after new increases concerned state officials.

Regionally, the totals continue to increase. Bartow County now reports 688 total cases, with 156 people who have been hospitalized and 42 people have died. In Paulding County, some 583 people tested positive in total, with 92 people hospitalized and 15 deaths. Floyd County reported 514 positives, 55 hospitalizations and 15 deaths.

Haralson County had a total Tuesday of 73 positive cases for the virus, 16 people who have been hospitalized and five deaths.

Nationwide, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2,581,229 cases and 126,739 deaths as of June 30.
