Polk County ended the first day of June with the case numbers growing again after staying fat over the weekend based on new figures from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
The day ended with the total number of people testing positive for Covid-19 at 124 as of June 1, an increase of six more people in the past 24 hours. It follows a trend that continues locally of case growth from the month before, where May saw weekday increases but mostly flattered over the weekends.
Numbers have also increased as COVID-19 testing expanded locally to include a drive-thru option at the Polk County Health Department in Cedartown.
In the final week of May alone, Polk County saw 23 new positives posted, stopping at 118 cases before a weekend flattening. Today’s increase of six new cases came with no new hospitalizations remaining at 13, and still the lone death reported weeks after it occurred on May 8.
Nationwide, the number now stood at 1,787,680 positives for the virus, and has been the cause of 104,396 deaths as of June 1 reporting.
Georgia represented 47,899 of those COVID-19 positives and 2,089 of the deaths that have been caused by the virus. Statewide hospitalizations since the end of February were posted at 8,302 patients, and out of that 1,818 people needed treatment in intensive care.
The state reported that there have been 562,815 tests conducted since reporting began, a huge surge from the opening two months when capacity lagged behind initial demand. Health officials have said they expect to find more people will test positive for COVID-19 as more people are tested.
June 1 also marked the final day the state planned to provide numbers three times a day, instead switching to a once-daily data report that will occur in the afternoon.
