Counting COVID cases: Polk increases to 138 in Thursday afternoon report; state nearing 50,000 positives mark

The latest tally provided by the Georgia Department of Public Health for June 4 saw seven new cases of COVID-19 reported for Polk County, bringing the total up to 138. Statewide, it seems the positives aren’t slowing down just yet either.

Though the number of deaths and hospitalizations heading into the tail-end of the first full week of June. According to the DPH figures now released just once daily, the total number of people who have tested positive for the virus now stands at 49,847 – that’s an an increase of 953 in the past 24 hours.

Yet the number of people admitted for treatment to a hospital sits at 8,557, and the deaths increased only slightly to 2,174 who have perished due to COVID-19.

That slowdown also is reflected in the number of new ICU patients admitted due to complications from the virus, standing at 1,872, which is only 31 new patients.

Where the increases are being shown still at a good rate is in the number of positive cases, and the number of tests. That figure increased by more than 20,000 again in the June 4 report to 590,957 tests conducted for the virus.

Here’s what the numbers looked like around Polk County for Thursday:

Bartow County jumped to 504 people who have tested positive for the virus, and out of that some 140 people have needed hospital treatment. The number of deaths stood at 39 on the day.

Paulding County reported a total of 340 people with COVID-19 after testing, and added one new hospitalization to put the figure at 71 people needing more medical treatment than home quarantine. There remained only 11 deaths from the virus in Paulding in the June 4 report.

Floyd County posted a figure of 292 people with COVID-19 in the daily report, with 43 hospitalizations and 15 deaths.

Haralson County added just a single case of COVID-19 on the day, reporting 50 cases of the virus, and added a lone hospitalization to stand at 14. There remained four deaths from the virus in Haralson.

The tallies from state health officials are still only a small portion of the 1,842,101 people who have tested positive nationwide, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. There have been 107,029 deaths reported from COVID-19 nationwide since tracking for the virus began earlier this year.
