Counting COVID Cases: Polk County’s largest daily increase reported ahead of July 4 holiday, statewide numbers now surpass 90,000

Friday’s 15 cases represents the largest increase Polk County has seen since tracking of the virus began.

Polk County added the largest daily increase of COVID-19 cases since tracking began statewide with 15 new positives on the rolls, according to the latest figures from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

That brought the local total to 224 to end the week heading into the July 4 holiday, though no new hospitalizations or deaths were reported. Those remained at 16 and one, respectively.

Statewide, the number of new cases jumped another 2,784 positives to bring the total number to 90,493 people who have contracted COVID-19 since numbers began being reported in late February. Another 103 people were hospitalized in the last 24 hours in the state to bring the total to 11,653, and some 2,413 people in total have needed intensive care when in the hospital, up another 24 patients in a day.

Sadly, some 2,856 people have now died statewide from the virus. That was a daily increase of another seven victims in Georgia.

Around Polk County, the June 3 count saw continued increases. Bartow County now reports 746 positives for the virus, with 159 people who have been hospitalized and no new deaths, remaining at 42.

Paulding County posted a total of 659 COVID-19 positives since reporting began, with 94 people who have been hospitalized and 16 deaths. Floyd County’s tally now stands at 582 people who have tests come back confirming their infection, with 56 people hospitalized and 15 deaths.

Haralson County’s totals jumped to 83 people who have COVID-19, but remained flat at 16 hospitalizations and five deaths.

Nationwide, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention are putting the total figure for cases in the United States officially at 2,732,531, up another 53,301 cases ahead of the July 4 holiday. The agency also reported 624 new deaths on July 3, bringing the total now to 128,648 who have perished due to the virus.
