Counting COVID Cases: Another day of single-digit increases locally, statewide tally jumps back up

Depending on where you live, COVID-19 could be finally slowing down or just ramping up. The virus in Polk County has only added another three positives on the day, but statewide the tally jumped dramatically after trending downward over the weekend and at the start of the week.

Polk County’s overall tally according to the latest figures from the Georgia Department of Public Health stood at 1,484 positives found in local residents since the first case was reported in early March. That’s out of the 11,074 tests that have been reported to the DPH as of this afternoon, an increase of 22 tests over the past day.

The percent positive remained at 13.4% overall after a recent dip, but the two-week average took a dramatic jump from a new low of 6.5% back up to 7.5% over the day.

Still unmoved locally was the number of hospitalizations and deaths, both remaining at 98 and 17 respectively in Polk County since tracking began.

Georgia’s number of new COVID-19 positives went right back up after a weekend decrease, at 1,081 compared to the 619 reported the day previously. That put the overall number of positives at 316,306 across Georgia since tracking began for COVID-19, a rate still at 10.1% out of the more than 3.2 million tests that have been conducted since tracking began.

Statewide hospitalizations went back up from day-to-day, at 142 as of this afternoon. Overall the number of patients treated in statewide medical centers sits at 28,339 people, and out of that figure 5,225 people have needed intensive care unit visits to treat COVID-19’s symptoms.

Sadly, another 34 Georgians died after a big decrease over the weekend in those numbers as well. That put the total number of deaths attributed to the virus or contributing to worsen other symptoms at 6,994 people since late February.

Overall, some 7,129,313 have tested positive for the virus since tracking began according to the confirmed numbers for today posted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which are a day behind. The agency put the death toll across the country at 204,598.
