Milestones were officially reached on a local level and the national stage as Polk County surpassed 800 cases in total, and the nation now nearing the point that 5 million people have tested positive for COVID-19.
The Georgia Department of Public Health put the number at 802 positives locally for their afternoon report, up by another 13 new cases in the past 24 hours. The latest update from health officials left the number of hospital patients treated from Polk at 38, and the number of deaths attributed to the virus at 11 on the day.
Statewide, COVID-19 positives went up another 3,177 people who have contracted the virus, bringing the overall tally since late February to 216,596 people. That’s now out of 1.8+ million tests administered, leaving the state rate at 10.9% of those tested.
Georgia hospitals are still seeing new patients come in by the day as well, with another 72 people admitted in the past 24 hours. That brings the overall total to 20,628 patients treated since tracking began in late February. Of that figure, 3,752 people needed intensive care treatment as of the afternoon report.
On a sad note, another 13 Georgians died due to COVID-19 in the latest report. That brought the overall total to 4,199 people who have perished from the virus.
National numbers were almost at a milestone of 5 million positives in total, sitting at 4,974,959 people who have been confirmed to have the virus as of August 8. That was a day-over-day increase of 54,590 new positives as of Saturday’s figures from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. They put the death toll from the virus in the United States at 161,284 people, a daily increase of 1,064 who have died from COVID-19.
