The City of Rockmart gave their thanks to an employee during their Tuesday council session for staying on the job for the last decade.

Lamar Whatley, a member of the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Rockmart, was honored by Mayor Sherman Ross and the City Council for his time on the job.

Whatley was given a round of applause for his long service in office and thanks from the council and mayor for his continued service.

“We appreciate your 10 years of service and everything that you do for our city, your coworkers and the citizens,” Ross said during the presentation.

Youth basketball champions were supposed to be honored during the Tuesday evening session as well, but unfortunately they were unable to attend due to being part of local baseball games being held at the same time as the council meeting. The council was honoring the recreation team with a proclamation for the month of April.

“I had an opportunity to see those young guys play a game,” Ross said. “We’ve got some talent coming up.”

Other items covered during the latest session included the appointment of Courtney Burnett and Richard Abrams to the city’s planning and zoning board. Burnett will be the full time member, and Abrams will act as an alternate.
