Mayor Debbie Pittman asks for community’s prayers for family

The City of Aragon lost a longtime resident who made a lasting impact on the community, and Mayor Debbie Pittman provided a statement today asking the community to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Funeral services were being held today for former Mayor William Lawrence “Larry” Pittman, who passed away at the age of 81 on Christmas Eve. He served as Mayor of Aragon from 1972 through 1983, and also served on the County Commission as chair for four years.

Just weeks before his death, Pittman and his wife Sadie recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Mayor Debbie Pittman made the following statement on behalf of the city earlier this afternoon:

“Myself and the rest of the City of Aragon Staff and the City Council are all shocked and saddened by the news of former Mayor Pittman’s passing during the holidays. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his lovely wife Sadie and the rest of his family and friends during their time of grief. Mayor Pittman was a great servant to our community whose impact will be felt for generations to come in Aragon. We ask the citizens of our city to join in prayers for his family at this time.”

The flag at city hall was placed at half-mast today as well.

Funeral services for the former Mayor, County Commissioner and Rockmart High principal were held at 2 p.m. today at Freeman Harris Funeral Home.
