City Commission set to meet tonight for discussion on budget, paving and more

The Cedartown City Commission is gathering for a work session this evening to talk about the 2021 fiscal year budget, what paving will be undertaken in the coming year and much more at city hall.

The Commission gathers in the city’s meeting room at city hall at 6 p.m. at 201 East Ave., Cedartown with the first item on their agenda in the work session is the 2021 fiscal year budget. It is in draft form at this time, and is set to be approved during the December regular session as the calendar and budget year for Cedartown comes to a close.

City Manager Edward Guzman is set to continue a conservative fiscal track put in place as in years past. He said the goal is to give the commission a draft of the budget, but that there’s a lot of work to be done to overcome tightened purses due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing a decrease in overall revenue during the past months and expected into the coming year.

Work continues with Chief Financial Officer Amy Orebaugh to reel in expenditures and continue to end with a positive fund balance for 2021, Guzman added.

He’ll also be presenting an update on the 2020 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant paving list up for work this year, slightly behind schedule as the county finishes out their paving season. He is also providing the commission with a preliminary list of roadways that need work and repair in 2021, giving them the opportunity to review and potentially add any roads for overall consideration as well.

The commission will also be looking at who is serving on committees during 2021, and the open enrollment process for insurance this year.

Guzman said in years past, the city has gathered employees together on the same day to handle insurance open enrollment at the City Auditorium, but with COVID-19 as a concern that makes it impossible for the year. So they’re going virtual to get employees insurance decisions on paper and figure out the cost for annual insurance premiums for the city this year.
