Board of Elections getting ready for 2020 GOP run-off in August, grow voter registration ahead of November ballot

The Polk County Board of Elections is getting ready for a new round of voting to settle races from the June 9 GOP primary that went to a run-off, which is coming up on August 11.

The work continues as the Board of Elections announced today that there are nearly 24,500 people are now registered to vote in Polk County, an increase of around 1,500 people who are now on the rolls after a purge brought the figure down to 23,000 last December. Elections Coordinator Brande Coggins said the Board of Elections set a goal locally to reach 25,500 by the end of 2020.

A 1,000 or so voters will put the office over their 2020 goal. Voter registration for the November election remains open until

“Although this year has been trying for us all, our office is so proud of Polk County Voters and their willingness to adapt to these changes and continue to exercise their right to vote. We would like to continue our Voter Education Initiative by exhausting all available resources, and we are welcoming any voter feedback or ideas to improve,” Coggins said. “It is our main goal to provide our voters with all available information before registering to vote or heading to the polls to cast their vote. Active voter registration is currently sitting at approximately 55% of our total population, this is a truly remarkable number, and we are excited to observe the continued increase.”

This comes ahead of the August 11 run-off to determine two seats locally: the District 31 State Senate run-off for the GOP nomination between Boyd Austin and Jason Anavitarte, and the Congressional run-off for the GOP nomination between Marjorie Greene and Dr. John Cowan.

Additional information about the upcoming run-off will be available in the days to come. Registration for those who wanted to participate in the vote is cutoff on July 13. She additionally said that use of absentee ballots or early voting is recommended ahead of the August 11 run-off.

“We are encouraging voters to participate in early voting in order to minimize wait times and crowds,” Coggins said. “All social distancing and cleaning practices will remain in place that we undertook during the June 9 primary.”
