Billie Dove Owenby Sawyer

Billie Dove Owenby Sawyer, age 88, of Cedartown passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord with her children by her side on May 18, 2023.

Billie was a stalwart in the community and is best remembered for her long nursing career at Polk General Hospital and for her dedication and service to her church, First Baptist Cedartown. Her cup runneth over with her joy and love of her Savior.

Always one to be busy, she filled her “retirement” days with gardening, travelling, serving on the bereavement committee at First Baptist, tending to the medical needs of the home bound and serving on the board of the Polk County Department of Public Health.

She also had her hands full with seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She loved spending time with David, Deborah and Sue, knowing there would be an adventure, great food or a shopping trip involved. She was a loving sister to her four sisters and cousin Ruby Anne. She was a friend to so many and will be missed.

Billie was a native of Cobb County, GA and moved to Cedartown with her husband, Tom and children David and Deborah in 1959.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Tom Sawyer; daughter, Sue Lynn Sawyer Dixon; parents Rev. Taft and Beatrice Owenby; sisters Glenna Owenby and Charlotte Owenby Russell.

She is survived by her son, David Tom Sawyer of Cherokee County, AL; daughter Deborah Anne Sawyer (Mark Hampton) of Gainesville, GA and Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Andrew Mallory Sawyer (Polina), Hillery Anne Sawyer (Ben), William David Sawyer (Haley), Cory Winnerman, Chloe Anne Hampton, Elizabeth Sawyer Hampton and Allison Beatrice Hampton; great grandchildren, Zoeie Sawyer, Liam Sawyer and Juniper Sawyer; her sisters, Joyce Owenby Warren, Martha Owenby Nasessig (Tom) and Taftene Owenby Baker (Jerry), sister-in-law’s Margaret Sawyer Martin (Bill), Eunice Sawyer Jones (Raymond), brother-in-law Neil Russell, and cousin, Ruby Anne Clayton. And way too many nieces, nephews and friends to list.

The family would like to thank the caregivers of Deegan Home Health Care, especially her dear friend Paula, her medical team at Floyd Medical Center ICU and the nurses of Floyd Medical Center Comfort Care.

The Sawyer family will receive friends and family on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home.
