City of Aragon follows suit with Rockmart to let voters choose whether to allow package liquor sales, change to malt beverage and Sunday sales all part of
Voters within the City of Aragon are going to get to decide for themselves whether they want to allow businesses to sell liquor – and are including Sunday sales as well – in ballot measures that will be coming up this November in municipal elections.
The Aragon City Council gave their yes votes to three different measures of import relating to alcohol sales during their regular monthly meeting following other action items up before council members.
First, the council approved a change to the malt beverage ordinance during their session, making a revision for beer sales on Sundays that will be during proscribed times starting at 12:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m., should voters decide to approve Sunday sales in November.
That resolution seeking a ballot measure was given approval by the council as well during the Thursday, June 17 session.
Third and just as important for the November ballot was a resolution approved to allow for distilled spirits package sales within the city as well, which voters will also get to decide upon before going into effect. The city also prepared a liquor sales ordinance.
Both the changes to the malt beverage and the liquor sales ordinances will be review by the city attorney for any potential revisions or changes that need to be made after Captain Paul Mazzuca helped produced the documentation for council approval based on ordinances from other cities.
The changes follow suit with what the City of Rockmart proposed earlier in the month to allow residents to purchase liquor as well from stores, and not just by the drink at a local restaurant.
Earlier in the year, Senate Bill 145 approved changes to the requirements to get liquor measures for package sales on the ballot, allowing city councils and commissions to put them directly on the ballot instead of requiring a percentage of voters to sign petitions for liquor sales.
Aragon currently allows sales Monday through Saturdays of malt beverages.
The council’s other business during their evening work session and regular meeting held on June 16 included the first reading of an ordinance governing the building and operations of self-storage buildings, the surplus of a number of items including property at 2 Walnut Street of no use to the city, locks, miscellaneous office equipment, and paper towel holders.
They approved the purchase of an outdoor and two indoor wireless access points for better internet service within the city, cancelled a contract with a shredding company and decided to purchase their own shredders among other items.
