Mr. John Wiley Layfield, Jr. age 90 of Rockmart, affectionately known as “Papa”, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
Mr. Layfield was born December 30, 1932 in Savannah, son of the late John Wiley Layfield, Sr. and the late Gladys Jordan Layfield.
He was a 1951 graduate of Cuthbert High School of Cuthbert, GA and was a metal fabrication teacher at Cedartown High School for 20+ years.
He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Rockmart and an active member of the Golden Age Group. He loved fishing and yard work.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Catherine Trippe Layfield on December 12, 2008; his son, John Wiley Layfield, III on June 19, 2022; and three sisters, Mary Ann Horst, Annette Plowden and Hazel Taylor.
Survivors include his granddaughter, Mindy Layfield Arp and her husband Ron of Aragon; two great-granddaughters, Sadie Arp and Sophie Arp; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Layfield will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Freeman Harris Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Odom officiating. Interment service will follow in Rockmart Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday prior to the service from 11:00a.m. until the funeral hour.
