It looks like a muddy mess out there this morning, Polk County.

The clouds cleared up for a while overnight after an on-and-off day of rain to open the second week of December on Monday, and potential for more rainfall is expected as the day drags on with 100% chances of rain in the forecast beginning after the lunch hour.

That’s after dense fog rolled into the area as overnight temps remained in the upper 50s following a warmer-than-average day heading into winter.

Make sure to bring the umbrella and keep it handy into the nighttime hours for those venturing out after dark, as more rain is expected throughout the evening and early morning hours.

Temperatures for the day are at a high of 68 (look for winds between 5 to 10 mph, and gusts up to 15 that might make a slight impact on the temperature) but overnight a more than 20-degree dip is expected with a low of 41.

Rain is moving out with a change in fronts and the jet stream by midweek, with just a 30% chance of showers on Wednesday with a high of 48, and a low as the clouds clear out down into the 20s again.

This short reminder of Georgia’s pleasant weather won’t last, as the forecast turns back toward the cold side of the thermostat come Thursday with highs sticking into the upper 40s and down into the 20s for the lows again, and low 50s and mid 30s as the temperature range on Friday.

Weekend weather should be about the same, with chances of showers again and a possibility of a slightly warmer start to next week to come. However expect that forecast to shift before week’s end from the NWS office in Peachtree City.

All the rain to start the week impacting a line on the east coast from Florida to Maine is also bringing winter weather to the upper Midwest. Some of that wintry mix might make it as far in the coming days down to the Smoky Mountains and impact eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina (for any of those planning trips that way for the holiday season.)

Stay tuned for more forecast updates on Wednesday, or as needed should the weather turn serious (though not expected today.)
