It is the final day of the autumn season as the holidays are closing in fast, and it is going to be a chilly weekend heading into Christmas week according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Look for temps to get up into the low 50s, and a windy day with gusts up to 25 mph as autumn closes out today. Morning frost should be melting away over the next hour or two (at the time of this posting,) but it’ll be back overnight as temperatures dip down into the 20s overnight.

Expect the thermometer to only get up into the 40s and up to 50 over the weekend, with wind gusts up to 20 mph on Saturday and calm winds on Sunday. Overnight lows are down into the 20s, and widespread frost is in the forecast.

Look for the holiday week to start off with temps in the 50s and down into the 20s on Monday, and into the upper 50s and down into the 40s overnight through Christmas as chances of showers return starting Christmas Eve night through Thursday.

Those looking to travel during the holidays – AAA predictions are up to 119 million people moving around the nation for Christmas – there’s going to be everything from gusty winds in the northern Plains to heavy rain along the West Coast. Those looking for a white Christmas should head toward the Northeast, but after weekend lake effect snow there’s only a likelihood of a weak storm moving through that could bring flurries to the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states.

The good news? The forecast locally only calls for chances of rain but not enough to make it a lock for Santa to fly around in the rain.

Check back for updates on the forecast through the rest of the weekend and into the holiday week.
