Batten down the hatches and pull in the patio furniture, windy conditions are expected to continue as the National Weather Service now has a wind advisory in effect until 3 a.m. Friday as stormy weather is moving across the southeast and is going to bring nearly an inch of rain with it overnight.

Forecasters in Peachtree City placed Polk and surrounding counties – including Bartow, Haralson, Paulding and Floyd counties – under a Wind Advisory that began at noon and will continue overnight as they expect winds to remain at 10 to 20 mph, and gusts up to 35 mph throughout the area as a cold front bringing storm systems moves into the area on the heels of a warm day in Polk County.

The concern is that wind gusts could blow around unsecured objects, and blow down tree limbs or older trees and cause power outages as a result.

Those who have outdoor items that could be picked up by gusty winds should secure them immediately.

Elevations above 2,500 feet should expect wind gusts as high as 45 mph from the oncoming storm front.

Sprinkles coming on after 1 p.m. through 3 p.m., then the potential for greater showers during the commute home, are possible as the NWS is watching a line of showers and thunderstorms moving into the area, though the main threats won’t be until later tonight and during the overnight hours on Friday morning.

Forecasters are noting a potential for brief tornadoes during isolated severe thunderstorms. Rainfall could reach up to an inch and a half across all of North Georgia during the upcoming storms, so they are also asking the public to be aware of the threat of isolated flash flooding in times when rainfall is the heaviest.

Check back for further updates on watches and warnings through the afternoon as additional information becomes available.

This storm front is already bringing about blizzard conditions in Oklahoma and Kansas and further west, and bringing stormy weather to the midwest and into the Ohio and Tennessee River valleys through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening hours.
