Bad news, folks. Helene has strengthened into a Hurricane, is headed toward the panhandle and is likely going to impact all along West Georgia and Alabama well into Friday.

The area is now under a tropical storm watch. A Tropical Storm Watch means tropical storm-force winds are possible somewhere within the area within the next 48 hours.

Additionally, a flood watch is now in effect through Friday.

State and local emergency management officials are gathering today amid stormy weather already set to move through and have already left the area under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning this morning.

Tropical Storm conditions are possible beginning on Thursday night, and extending into Friday morning as the storm moves past inland into the Tennessee Valley and the Smoky Mountains.

The area could get at least four inches of rain over the next three days, and could get as much as eight inches of rain.

The extended and heavy wet weather should alleviate one problem: the moderate drought conditions persisting across Northwest Georgia over the past months.

Temperatures have also decreased down to seasonable cools.

Be prepared

Local emergency management officials want to make sure you’re prepared for the potential for severe weather impacting the area.

The threat of tropical storm conditions means that loose items in yards can suddenly fly away and become dangerous projectiles. Please secure any items in your yard that could take off in heavy winds.

Wet conditions combined with soil that has been dry means there is potential for flash flooding in low lying areas unexpectedly during heavy rain showers. Take precautions to prevent damage to property or danger to you or your loved ones.

Do not drive through areas of roadway that are completely covered in water. It may cause your vehicle to stall.

The potential for power outages are likely for the area. Be prepared for extended time where power may not be available in your area.
