Cedar Creek is running high and localized flooding is causing issues in Polk County, including a delayed start to school this morning.

Overnight storms brought with it a lot of rain, and with it the normal range of problems caused by rising waters in local waterways. Full ditches are spilling over onto some roads, and places like Prior Street at the softball field in Cedartown are impassible for the moment.

The National Weather Service has the area under a flood warning through 1:30 p.m. as additional rainfall is set to continue through until mid-morning.

The Polk County Emergency Management Agency have also been busy at work fielding reports of flooding that continue to arrive. They added a list of road closures this morning, which include:

  • Church Street in Rockmart
  • Stringer Road
  • Brock Road
  • Bethlehem Road at the Bridge
  • Fish Creek Road at Gammon Road
  • Bellview at Anderson
  • Furnace Street (Cedartown)

Damage has also been reported on Horseshoe Creek Road.

Additional roadways reported to have flooding issues include Grady Road, White River Road, Hardin Road, Shiloh Road and Mountain Home Loop.

Please take caution and do not drive through floodwaters, as you may stall out your vehicle and become trapped.

If you have a roadway condition to report, please comment below. Polk Today will communicate those to Polk County EMA as they become available.

The EMA posted this video of the park in downtown Rockmart this morning as well:

In Cedartown, city officials are closing off Prior Street, and are shutting down Furnace Street until floodwater fall as the need for the floodgates to close at Big Spring Park is underway.

Brock Road in Rockmart has localized flooding issues, and Seaborn Jones Park is underwater again this morning on the east side of the county as Euharlee Creek rose as well during the overnight hours.

Polk School District decided to delay opening of campuses across the county for two hours to allow students on buses and car riders to get to school safely. The Polk County Health Department in Cedartown also delayed their opening to 10 a.m. for safety reasons.

One area usually impacted by heavy rainfall is an East Avenue neighborhood just outside of the city limits in Cedartown around the Hodges Street area. Though water was pooling in areas, the roads were passable and people weren’t forced to flee their homes as of this morning.

One area usually underwater by this point is a neighborhood off of East Avenue around Hodges Street. This morning, the water was much less of a problem than it has been in the past.

Cedar Creek is getting close to the top of the levee at the Goodyear Soccer Complex in Cedartown on Tuesday, January 4, 2023.

Fortunately, rainy weather is set to move out before too long. The NWS in Peachtree City predict that cloudy skies will give way to gradual clearing and a high of 69.

Temperatures will drop by more than 20 degrees overnight down to 42, and winter weather.
