He’s a real spelling champ after taking the top spot in the Polk School District bee once again.
Lane Slater took the win in the 2024 Districtwide Spelling Bee, notching another win in his belt as he will go onto represent Polk School District in region competition for a second year in a row.
Slater, an eighth grader at Rockmart Middle School, will represent the county in late February 2025 when the region spelling bee is held at Georgia Highlands College.
The Rotary Club of Polk County sponsored the event, and the PSD added their thanks to Spelling Bee Coordinator, Caller, and Judges–Amanda Hendrix, Dale Freeman, Mary Beekman, Patty Rogers, Debbie Ross, and Sandi Smith.
Slater was the top speller in Polk County, and will be backed up by alternate Jac Carter, this year’s runner up from Westside Elementary School. (He was the school winner for Westside as well.)
Additional students who participated included Cedartown Middle’s Knox Nettles and Clayton Sensing, Cherokee Elementary’s Nayeli Lopez Coronado and Nora Lee Grant, Addylyn Robinson and Elijah Belcher at Eastside Elementary, as well as Northside’s Eimy Ramirez and Jett Addison.
Michael Crawford was the alternate from Rockmart Middle, and Van Wert Elementary’s Anna Shepard and Korr Chambers, Young Grove’s Makalyn Grimes and Juan Cervantes Puga, and finally alternate from Westside Trina Swanson.
