A midweek event gave parents the opportunity to ensure their youth are riding around securely in the back of vehicles in Polk County, part of a continued nationwide effort to keep kids safe.

Major Rachel Haddix said at least a dozen families (likely more) were helped on Wednesday during a partner event between the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Life Matters Outreach to check out car seats and help by providing a replacement if possible.

“We had a lot of interest in this event, and at one point we gave out all the car seats than we were able to bring with us,” Haddix said. “Fortunately, we still had more at the Sheriff’s Office and brought them over to hand out as well.”

The Sheriff’s Office runs the Safe Kids Polk County and annually holds events around the county to ensure that families know the proper way to secure child safety seats inside of vehicles, and to check to make sure they are still in date. They are part of an overall Safe Kids Georgia program – who help provide the seats – and a national program geared toward child safety inside of vehicles.

Car seats – like many products that are used to keep people safe, such as fire extinguishers – do have a expiration date. Seats also are no longer good if they are involved in any kind of wreck or crash that could compromise the integrity of the materials used to make them.
