Portable showers and laundry facilities are re-opening today at Union Grove Baptist Church on Cason Road for those who are still without power and need to wash up and get some clothes clean amid continued cleanup operations following a stormy day in Polk County on March 25.

It didn’t help that another round of stormy weather passed through already this morning and prompted a severe thunderstorm watch. Cooler temperatures are set to come behind the cold front pushing through wet weather, which will likely make continued cleanup operations starting this week all the more difficult.

On Saturday, County Manager Matt Denton was among those out volunteering around the Tuck Street/Woodall Road area where residents experienced some of the worst of the damage of what was likely tornadoes. Denton said that Public Works officials were out on Saturday alongside volunteers and cleared more than 30 loads of debris.

Expect traffic to remain closed on East Point Road, Woodall Road, and Lee’s Chapel Road all within the bypass through at least Monday as utility crews continue to work on restoring power and other services to the area.

Officials are also asking that people please avoid these areas to only local traffic, and any thru traffic to other spots should find other routes around to travel to their destination.

Polk County Public Safety Director Randy Lacey is expecting officials from the National Weather Service to confirm reports of at least one tornado hitting the county this past Thursday amid several storms that passed through on March 25. They caused damage to dozens of homes, knocked out power to thousands of customers in the county and have left behind more downed trees to clear away.

For those who are in need of a hot shower and to wash clothes, the portable units that arrived at Union Grove Baptist Church on Cason Road are available again starting at 12 p.m. The facilities are providing the supplies needed for laundry and for bathing.

It’ll be available until 6 p.m. Two restroom facilities with showers and four sets of washers and dryers are available at this time.

The Sheriff’s Office, who has been helping coordinate efforts to get cleanup volunteers to spots where they are needed, posted their thanks to Paschal Lawn Care of Rockmart for their help as well.

The page also posted this item of note:

“Meet Autumn and Grace, some new Sheriff friends that (Commissioner) Scotty Tillery and Chrisy Henderson was able to help out with food and supplies today in Cedartown.”

Check back on Monday for more about storm damage and get a full picture of what the storms did to Polk County over the past days.
