Local students in the Polk County College and Career Academy scored big ahead of the weekend as they brought home region medals in the SkillsUSA competition.

Three students came away with gold this year in SkillsUSA competition locally. Those included:

  • Cedartown High student Addison Millican was the top winner in the region for Esthetics in the SkillsUSA competition.
  • Maddison Arnold of Rockmart High also won a first place medal for Job Skill Demonstration.
  • Hadlee Caldwell at Rockmart High won first for prepared speech.

Additionally, Mela Reynolds of Cedartown took second in Cosmetology, Jamie Newberry of Rockmart took second in automotive service technology, and third place finishes went to Zaylan Voils of Cedartown in First Aid and CPR, and Isaac Iglesias in prepared speech.

Caden Doehla of Rockmart High took third in automotive repair, Arabella Garrett of Rockmart took a bronze in Esthetics, and Patsy Morris of Rockmart also won a third place spot in job interviews.

Several local teens took part in the competition in SkillsUSA last week representing the district ahead of the State SkillsUSA championships on Friday, December 6.

SkillsUSA competitions bring together thousands of students annually who look to show off their workplace, technical and personal skills in a variety of areas of study that provide high schoolers opportunities after they graduate with years of practical experience under their belt.

Polk School District has previously provided the state with multiple champions in areas like welding, various construction areas, healthcare, cosmetology and office-related skills as well (like public speaking, for instance.) The Technical College System of Georgia also provides students who participate in SkillsUSA as well.

The next level of competition will be the state SkillsUSA championships, held in late February 2025. Those who win on the state level then have a shot at national gold later in the coming new year.
