It wasn’t the first time this big game was suspended, and it likely won’t be the last.
Cedartown was in the midst of playing against Rockmart in the first quarter – 4:10 left on the clock – when lightning flashes were spotted in the sky and the wind began to pick up.
Then stormy weather from the north blew in and ruined the fun for everyone.
Cedartown and Rockmart fans alike first attempted to huddle together under bleachers as others made a run for their vehicles as winds picked up and began to knock over signs and tents on both sides of the field. On and off heavy rain showers sent the rest for cover or onward to their cars.
Before the PA announcer finally came over the speakers to announce to “the last eight people who are still in the stadium” that the game would resume on Saturday evening, picking up where it left off.
Rockmart High School officials have made it clear tickets from the game tonight will be honored.
Polk County was one of many who were hit by severe thunderstorms during the evening hours, requiring football teams across the region to suspend play and pick back up tomorrow. Dalton at North Murray, the Corky Kell Dave Hunter Classic game up at Barron Stadium, Model at Sonoraville – just to name a few.

Officials at the Polk County Emergency Management Agency said the area didn’t go completely unscathed. A house on East Second Street in Aragon suffered damage due to a tree crashing down during the storm. At least one other had fallen and blocked the roadway.
No injuries have thus far been reported as of the time of writing, or any major damage per EMA officials.
Game notes
Cedartown was up over Rockmart 7-0 with more than 7 minutes played in the game. Bulldogs QB Isaiah Johnson connected with Demarcus Gardner for a big touchdown pass to take the lead.
Rockmart was driving and Nate Davis was finding some success against the Cedartown defense.
When the game resumes on Saturday evening, Rockmart will pick up on the drive where they left off – 3 and 8 with 4:10 left in the first quarter.
