Johnny Shane Estes

A Rockmart man remains in custody with his bond denied after being found with more than an ounce of cocaine during a traffic stop, and a meth pipe as well.

Polk County Police took Johnny Shane Estes, 51, of 600 Pine Road, Rockmart, into custody on Thursday evening around 9 p.m. after he was stopped for a left tail light not functioning correctly on a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck. When police came up to the truck to ask for Estes’ license and registration, he told officers that he left his license at his girlfriend’s house but asked officers “not to run his name because he had an active warrant out of Paulding County.”

Estes was right, he did have an active warrant for probation violation taken out by Paulding County, and was held while police conducted a consent search of his vehicle.

Within the truck they found a glass meth pipe, along with just over an ounce (1.2 oz) of cocaine in a bag that was hidden in the passenger side compartment of the truck. Estes was reported to explain to police the bag was baking soda that he kept for controlling his heartburn, and said he put it in the bag because a box was messy.

Police did a field test of the substance inside the bag twice and both times it tested positive for the drug.

Estes remains in the Polk County Jail on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and trafficking in cocaine, illegal drugs, marijuana or methamphetamine.
