

Update: A second washout was reported this evening by Polk County Police on a local roadway as impacts from flooding continue across the area.
Police posted on Facebook this evening that a small portion of Runyon Road had sluffed off and left another sinkhole on a county roadway, near the intersection with Antioch Road.
They’re asking drivers to avoid the area for the time being.
A Johnson Lake Road washout happened this morning and sent a driver to the hospital with minor injuries after a drainpipe gave way near Culp’s Lake.

Polk County officials report that a driver who experienced the force of water early Thursday morning was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.
Officials from Polk County Emergency Management Agency report that the driver on Johnson Lake Road was transported to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center with only minor injuries after a drainage pipe at Culp’s Lake washed out and took a portion of the roadway with it.
The roadway near Fullwood Springs Road is now closed off and will be for the coming days until the water completely drains away.
Public Works will have to replace both the drain pipe, fill in the area and replace pavement to fix the washout.
Flooding also caused closures across the county as waters rose from several inches of rain that fell on Polk County starting Tuesday night and a full day on Wednesday.
Sixth Street near the old Probation Detention Center is among those roadways that was completely covered by water during the latest round of flooding in the area.
Furnace Street was also closed off thanks to backed up water from Big Springs cut off from a flooded Cedar Creek.
