Starting this coming year, the Cedartown-Polk County Humane Society will enjoy a permanent place to call home.

Humane Society President Charlotte Harrison told the Cedartown Kiwanis Club in a brief update that plans are to start up operations at 3416 Rockmart Highway after the start of the new year.

Harrison reported that the new location for the Humane Society is opening in January 2022 as work to transform a home into a safe place for Polk County’s dogs and cats.

Construction work at the donated home and buildings is near completion including a newly paved parking lot out on Rockmart Highway.

She said delays in getting kennels for dogs and cats to be temporarily housed have impacted their opening, but expectations are they will arrive soon and won’t cause any further issues with plans to open.

“We are completely moved out of our Adamson Road location,” Harrison said and added thanks to the community and individuals like Mike Hunter for help in making the more possible. She also said a great big thank you to Alice and Elmo Carter who graciously allowed the Humane Society to use their building for the past four years.

That includes the family of Kerry Hall, who donated her property to the organization after she passed earlier this year. She was an avid animal lover who cared for scores of pets during her life at her former home.

The 4.7 acres includes a house, a Quonset-like structure, two other outbuildings that are being rehabbed to house and provide a variety of other services to needy animals.
