Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene talked about her time in office thus far and her work in Congress so far, which has been focused on trying to block legislation for the Green New Deal, filing impeachment articles against President Joe Biden, and acting as the self-appointed chairwoman of the Committee of the Whole, or when all of Congress is gathered together in one session.
Greene, who was elected in November 2020 to replace U.S. Rep. Tom Graves, came into office in early January and not long after the attacks on the Capitol was stripped of committee assignments due to comments made in the wake of those attacks.
She told those who signed up for and got a confirmation to come to the town hall on Wednesday, May 5, that with her self-appointed role as chairwoman of the committee of the whole, she’s been attempting to ensure that lawmakers in both parties are having their votes recorded when they give their yea or nay to bills coming before the House of Representatives.
Additionally, she told constituents that she filed Articles of Impeachment against President Joe Biden because she feels him unfit for office, continuing a narrative of allegations against President Biden’s son Hunter of wrongdoing in dealings in Ukraine and China.
Greene also touted her opposition to the Democrats plans to incorporate much of their plans for the Green New Deal proposed in 2018 into the new infrastructure package being shopped in Congress. Greene told constituents that only a small percentage of the funding would go toward actual infrastructure projects, and that she supported repairing the nations bridges and roads, but not funding the electrification of the U.S. Federal Fleet since she said the batteries for those vehicles will come from China.
The Congresswoman also continued her support for former President Donald Trump and encouraged constituents to check out his forthcoming social media platform while also citing Facebook’s decision over the ban of the former president’s account on the platform. During the town hall, Greene said that the company wouldn’t actually ban the president for fear of losing users who would jump to the new platform instead.
However, a board within the company decided to indefinitely uphold his ban according to several news outlets on Wednesday, with the option to look at the issue again in six months after being able to determine a “proportional response” (from Reuters.)
Greene’s support of the former President extended to many of his policies, including her belief the nation should complete the Border Wall. It was announced in recent weeks that the Department of Defense had finally canceled the rest of the contracts for construction on the wall started during former President Trump’s term in office, but only 452 miles of the southern border was actually completed, though only 47 miles of that was actually new wall sections not previously in place or upgraded. The government set aside $15 billion for the project at the time, much of that in the Department of Defense budget.
Interrupted for applause multiple times during the event, one of those included Greene seeking greater support from her Republican colleagues on issues she finds important as well as calling upon her party colleagues to do more than they have in the past.
“I have no problems in saying that Republicans failed,” she said. “They didn’t repeal Obamacare. I’m still mad about that, aren’t you? They didn’t defund Planned Parenthood. Why not? Why? They didn’t follow the law. They didn’t defund sanctuay cities? Why not? Do we harbor illegal aliens and criminals now? Why didn’t they do anything about Section 230? They had the opportunity. Now we have big tech and can do whatever they want.”
She said users unhappy with their treatment on Facebook and Twitter should leave, and that voters should support candidates who agree with their views and want to see action done, not just Republicans making promises to get work done and not follow through.
