Cedartown officials celebrated with local youth on the pitch even as rain fell on Saturday as the Goodyear Soccer Complex celebrated its official opening.
The grand opening event coincided with Opening Day ceremonies for youth playing their first games of the season for the Parks and Recreation department’s soccer leagues.
Cedartown Commissioners were joined by city administration, families and fans as players enjoyed new fields despite some soggy weather out for the June 1 games.
Saturday’s fun was preceded by a parade of the teams over to Goodyear Park from South College Street and West Avenue, and opening day ceremonies including a ribbon cutting for the new fields.

Cedartown’s multiphase project over at the overall Goodyear Soccer Complex included new paved and gravel parking spots, a replacement of the old baseball diamond to a soccer field to add to the one from Phase 1, and the skate park. Bathrooms and concessions are also part of the facility, and lighting to allow for night games.
Much of this was covered through grant funds: T-Mobile, the state via the Land Water Conservation Fund through the Department of Natural Resources, and the Trippe Foundation.
More than 300 youth are participating in soccer leagues this year and will get a chance to touch the field.
